Almost all types of teaching methods require the teacher to prepare visual aids for the subject that is being taught. Visual aids help students see and understand various concepts that are important to the subject at hand.

There are four popular types of visual aids that teachers use to present concepts to students. Each visual aid has advantages and disadvantages. Here’s a look at two of the popular types of visual aids; flip charts and posters, and videos.

Flip Charts or Posters

Flip charts or posters are typically large poster boards that display the concepts out to the class.

Advantages include:

  • cost effective. These only require poster board and markers.
  • Easy to transport from location to location.
  • Easy to interact with and have students interact with the class.

Disadvantages include:

  • Not large enough to be seen by large classes or groups of people.
  • Can be chaotic if not properly done or written so classes can read what is on the board.

Videos

Videos are multimedia presentations of the facts and concepts for the students.

Advantages include:

  • Extremely professional in appearance.
  • Easy for students to understand and watch.
  • Captivating for large groups and students who have problems paying attention.

Disadvantages include:

  • Extremely expensive and time consuming to create.
  • Requires special audio visual equipment to show to large groups of people.
  • Doesn’t encourage students to participate and ask active questions during the presentation.

Despite the advantages and disadvantages, the type of visual aid a teacher uses will depend upon the class and how comfortable the teacher is using that particular type of visual aid.

Communicating With The School About Your Child’s Needs

Essentially, there are four people who need to be involved when your child needs medication, has allergies or has special learning needs. These are your Principal, your vice principal, your child’s teacher, and the school nurse. These personal are important to keep informed if there are any changes, problems that crop up, or changes made in your child’s personal life that can be traumatic for them.

The very first thing to do is to document their individual needs. Write down the child’s medication schedule. Include the dosage, the time it should be taken, and anything the nurse should watch out for when administering the medication. For allergies, create a what to do in case they are exposed reminder sheet. For special learning needs, it is important to document all results of testing that was done and the diagnosis. Keep plenty of copies in case of a misfiling or lost paperwork.

Schedule an appointment with each administrator and the teacher to specifically talk about and address your child’s needs. You should also talk about any concerns and any potential problems. Make sure to hand deliver your documents. This way it doesn’t get lost in the mail or get caught up in a backlog on the fax machine. Take the time now to inform administrators instead of waiting until a serious problem occurs.

Finally, keep your administrators and child’s teacher updated. The administrators can’t help your child if they don’t know the challenges that your child is facing.

How Parents Can Help Their Kids With Their Math Homework

For parents, the toughest homework to provide assistance with is math. Beyond the basics, math is one of those skills that becomes rusty over time. Add in new changes in how it is taught and you have a recipe for disaster when it comes time to help with homework. There are some steps a parent can take to help their kids with math. The first piece of advice is to start helping at the beginning of the year, way before mid-term exams or the end of the year cramming session.

Don’t be afraid to go backward. In other words, if you are tackling a problem that is in the middle of the chapter, go back to the beginning of that chapter to review what you may have forgotten about solving that type of problem. Have your child assist you with the review. Each section builds upon the chapter and going back can help you answer the questions of how to begin or what do we do next.

If you still aren’t certain by going backward, then begin by asking for additional help. This can include going to the internet, asking the smarter half, or even contacting a tutor. An older sibling is a great resource to tap if you can convince them to help. It should be noted, that it might be easier to get advice from a real person rather than on the internet. The internet can be rather confusing when it comes to finding out how to answer the problems.

Finally, don’t let frustration rule over homework time. Frustration only makes the homework problems worse. If it comes to that point, walk away or take a break. Don’t try to force the issue. Let it go and contact the child’s teacher. A talk with your child’s teacher is essential to communicate the problem and to finding a satisfactory solution.
